1. Frequency Regulation (Primary & Secondary Response)

Spinning reserves require immediate availability, which batteries can provide almost instantaneously, while non-spinning reserves can be delivered with a slight delay.

4. Black Start Capability


BESS can restart power systems after a blackout without relying on conventional synchronous generation. Their fast-start capability and independence from fuel supply make them ideal black start resources.


5. Synthetic Inertia


Modern battery systems can emulate inertia by injecting active power during sudden frequency drops, helping stabilize the grid similar to traditional rotating machines but with much faster response.


6. Ramp Rate Control


BESS can smooth out fluctuations from variable renewable generation by controlling the ramp-up or ramp-down of power output, reducing stress on grid infrastructure.
